Introduction to PTEN genetic syndrome (PHTS) – Hack4RARE – Team Building

MoCo Makers, Captial Area BioSpace, and Rockville Science Center have partnered to put a team together for the 2021 Hack4RARE event – targeting rare genetic conditions. This event is is put on by MIT Hacking Medicine and the Children’s Tumor Foundation.

At this talk we will introduce PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome (PHTS) – and how makers like you can contribute this medical area.

A previous Hack4RARE event presented the ‘ask’ from medical experts on how we can contribute to PHTS, see the video here:

We particularly need developers, mobile app devs, web developers, as well as graphics artists, and technical writers for this research track.

During this competition, we are building one or more teams. You are welcome to join us even if you are interested in doing a solo-project or a break-out team.

In June we will do team-building exercises, and introduce some of the science behind each of the four possible tracks for the competition. In July we will focus on productive work to solve one of the problems in a competition area. The four tracks possible in this competition are:

1. Neurofibromatosis (NF1, NF2, schwannomatosis)
2. Desmoid Tumors, a very rare neoplasm that develops from fibroblasts
3. PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome (PHTS)
4. RASopathies (Cardio-facio cutaneous CFC, Costello CS, Noonan NS)

I hope you will join us for this event. Be aware that in July we will switch from educational events to working-sessions only.
