Gravity for Spacecraft Maneuvers – Space – Learning Series/Webinar

“Houston, we need a Slingshot maneuver.” – Some hyper-intelligent space monkey crew, probably

Join us for a talk by MoCo Maker member Thomas Rackers on the topic of Gravity Assist for space probes.

Many probes launched from Earth to other planets can save propellant and reduce expense by using Gravity Assist maneuvers, also known as Slingshot or Swing-By maneuvers. A Gravity Assist maneuver takes advantage of the motion of a planet around the Sun to increase or decrease a probe’s speed and change its direction without expending fuel. But how exactly does a gravity assist maneuver work? Join us and find out!
